Equipment TechnicianJob no: 496158Department: Coll of Arts, Hum, Soc ScienceWork type: StaffLocation: Stanislaus - TurlockCategories: Unit 9 - CSUEU - Technical Support Services, Probationary, Full TimePosition Summary(Classified as: Equipment Technician II, Specialist Equipment)Full time position available on or after April 20, 2020 for the Art Department.Under the general supervision of the Department Chair, the incumbent will provide safe skilled installation, repair and maintenance of common and specialized equipment including major overhaul and design, fabrication and construction of complex or prototype equipment and perform other support services as required in the Art Department. Additionally, this position will provide safety and technical support of equipment, supervises students in and outside of class time including materials handling and maintenanceJob DutiesDuties include but are not limited to: Perform complex troubleshooting, design, fabricate, modify, and repair specialized technical art equipment following original or suggested plans. Fabricate special furniture, display structures, shelving and containers. Analyze processes and understand why and how equipment functions. Analyze and understand operation of equipment and establish best practices of regular maintenance and best, safe practices for use by faculty, staff and students. Analyze equipment problems and determine what repairs are needed. Install, replace and maintain a wide variety of equipment, including electrical air tools, woodworking equipment, metal working equipment, ceramics equipment, foundry equipment, and other equipment used in the department. Provide support services including issue, storage, requisition, and maintenance of inventories of equipment and supplies as well as keeping accurate records of deaccessioned of equipment. Use computers at a level appropriate to the duties required, including use of spreadsheets, and maintaining or updating basic knowledge necessary for the use and troubleshooting of technological equipment. Provide efficient purchasing, shipping or pick-up of supplies and equipment from various suppliers. Ensure that safety is paramount over all duties and takes precedence when necessary and appropriate, including the safe use of materials and equipment by students of all levels. Maintain studio equipment, studio and storage spaces to ensure safe working conditions and work habits, including removal of student work, refurbishing of shops and indoor and exterior spaces and shelving (repairing, sweeping, dusting, etc.), and reorganizing shop materials and tools to ensure instructor and student access to effective learning environments. Maintain updated MSDS sheets for materials and chemicals used in the Art Department. Provide regular updates to the Safety Handbook. Establish regular, weekly, monthly and annual maintenance schedules for tools and equipment (including cleaning, alignment and parts replacement). Maintain a logbook to record dates of service, with comments documenting focus of maintenance and repair activity. Oversee students in the safe operation of all equipment and tools in the Art Department. Demonstrate capacities, limitations, and critical safety/danger areas of each piece of equipment used by students in the sculpture area. Keep a well-organized stock inventory of all tools, materials and equipment on hand to dispense in the Art Department. Maintain effective check out system and ensure secure storage for all tools and consumables. Demonstrate equipment and construction techniques in the sculpture area. As the primary safety officer of the department, create effective demonstrations of safety procedures and protocols for students. Monitor use of equipment for safe use during class and open studio hours. Provide technical equipment support to all areas of the department (including offsite locations supporting student studio activity) based on curricular need and class scheduling, including preparation of chemical solutions, compounds, and other specialized materials used in instruction. Assist department Instructional Support Technician as necessary with instructional support in all areas of the department. Request multiple quotes and advise faculty of vendors for specific supplies, materials, and equipment in instructional areas. In coordination with relevant faculty, initiate purchasing of supplies, materials, and equipment applicable to instructional areas. Conduct all purchasing activity in a fiscally responsible manner and ensure proper adherence to university purchasing policies and procedures. Budget appropriately for regular maintenance of tools and other equipment. Prepare monthly budget reports with accompanying spreadsheets listing revenue and expenses, and submit these electronically to the chair and administrative support coordinator. Oversee the safe storage, handling and disposal of chemicals and materials used in the Art Department. Experiment with and develop new processes, techniques, materials, and equipment for use in the Art Department. Work proactively with faculty to establish best operating procedures for the sculpture facilities, with emphasis on organization, storage, equipment, and material use. Other duties as assigned.Minimum QualificationsEducation: Equivalent to two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in the type of equipment repair to which assigned. Completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of a full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair may be substituted for one year of the required experience.Experience: Equivalent to three years of progressively responsible journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area to which assigned, including one year involving design modifications and fabrication of complex and highly technical equipment. Equivalent to two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment or related equipment experience as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of the required experience.Preferred Qualifications Experience providing equipment support for sculpture or a related unit or discipline or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to Art. Experience in all aspects of the materials and processes to be used in the sculpture studio and other art courses. Demonstrated experience in aspects of sculpture.Required Qualifications Comprehensive knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the construction, installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of equipment of the area of specialization. Thorough knowledge of equipment design. Thorough knowledge of repair, maintenance, troubleshooting and overhaul. Ability to apply previous experience and knowledge to the design of new applications. Ability to plan, organize and coordinate the work of technical projects. Ability to review and prepare specifications for technical equipment. Ability to design, fabricate, and assemble devices. Ability to coordinate equipment repair performed by other specialists. Ability to analyze equipment problems and determine what repairs are needed. Ability to install, replace, repair, and maintain a wide variety of equipment for the area of job assignment. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position. Ability to make arithmetic computations and maintain excel spreadsheets where required.Salary Range$3,748 - $6,779 per month plus excellent paid benefits. (Anticipated salary will be $3,748 - $4,123 per month, depending on the qualifications of the successful finalist.)Compensation & BenefitsCommensurate with qualifications and experience.
