Job Description:

Job Summary


Under supervision provide laboratory assistance in all lab sections and office areas of the Turlock laboratory. Perform bacteriological testing. Perform Quality Control/Quality Assurance testing, including basic biochemical tests using bacteria. Set up Salmonella cultures, perform Salmonella procedures, ID Salmonella, including fecals, fluffs, drag swabs, etc.
Perform other basic testing as needed. Perform serological and histopathological testing. Process blood samples and setting up serum samples for testing. Under supervision of technical personnel perform diagnostic tests on samples utilizing ELISA, plate agglutination, immunodiffusion, and hemagglutination assays. Perform routine laboratory maintenance and cleaning.

THIS IS NOT AN H1B/J1 OPPORTUNITY. Candidate must be legally permitted to work in the United States and not subject to revocation.

This is not a research position. The position is located in a diagnostic laboratory where quality control and assurance as well as meticulous working habits are essential.

Per the terms and agreements of the department's contracts and grants, the position requires signing of a Confidentiality Agreement or Non-Disclosure Agreement regarding testing and client information.

Share weekend/holiday coverage as needed. Occasional travel to CAHFS branch laboratories, conferences, etc.

All CAHFS employees must know and follow job safety procedures, attend required health and safety training, proactively promote safety at work, and promptly report actual and potential accidents and injuries.

Must wear laboratory required/supplied PPE and participate in Health Surveillance Program.

This position is subject to prophylactic vaccination for rabies, as well as medical surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.

Tolerate strong odors and the sight of exposed animal tissues and blood products, and to handle/dispose of infectious materials.

Work with tissues, dead animals, and infectious materials.

May, at times, work with or be in areas where biohazardous and chemical materials and infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards of the position are, but are not limited to Salmonella, Listeria, E. coli, Campylobacter, hot acids, bases, ethers and other chemicals.

Valid CA driver's license to transport materials.

- Knowledge of & experience working in a veterinary/medical laboratory diagnostic setting; including specimen handling, operation of laboratory equipment/LIMS, preparing/mixing/inventory of reagents, & sterile/ general laboratory techniques.

- Knowledge of basic mammalian and avian anatomy and animal disease(s).

-Skills to process samples and perform serological tests accurately and efficiently according to laboratory protocol including use of agglutination and hemagglutination methods.

Skills to process clinical (animal tissues and fluids) and environmental samples for bacteriology and parasitology examination.

- Working knowledge and skills with quality control methods in a diagnostic laboratory including proper identification, labeling and completing of documents related to received animals, specimens, and/or supplies; and maintaining accurate inventory and quality control records for biological media.

- Knowledge and skills to perform staining and sub-culturing of diagnostic specimens; and to accurately calculate and perform dilutions and to calculate molarity and normality.

-Customer service skills, with the experience to interact with individuals at all levels of the University and with external clients. Skills to obtain, comprehend, and give adequate consideration to others' priorities, opinions and concerns. Skills to communicate complex and sensitive information, negotiate and resolve conflicts and promote teamwork.

- Skills with word processing, spreadsheet and database applications in a Windows environment for correspondence, documentation and accurately enter data into computers.

- Skills to establish priorities to meet daily and variable workload demands and large sample volume (multi-tasking); and to accurately file both alphabetic and numerically.


- Background in basic chemistry and biochemistry.

- Knowledge and skills to practice aseptic technique.

- Knowledge and skills to accurately evaluate test results and to follow quality control procedures and guidelines.

- Experience with a Laboratory Information System-LIMS to accurately assign test codes in database.
